Ad War Facebook vs. TikTok!

TikTok ads are here to stay, and that is a big deal for Facebook. With TikTok's success, Facebook will have to make changes in its approach to advertising.

When you think of advertising, your mind probably thinks of TV ads, banners, building advertisements, flyers in cafes, business cards, etc. But as technology advances (and we’re already entering the era of Web 3.0), so does advertisement!

We’ve entered the digital era for quite some time, and social media advertising is more and more used by big and small brands. So much that, we now encounter ads everywhere on social media!

How is Facebook different from TikTok advertisements?

The first thing you should know is that the types of creatives you'll find in TikTok ads are quite different from what you'd use in Facebook ads.

Big 3 Media underlined how important it is to think about audience targeting before starting a campaign by saying:

On paper, both platforms allow you to target users of all ages, but it’s important to note that both platforms attract different age demographics. About 41% of TikTok users are aged between 16 and 24, who form the majority of their user base. In contrast, 31.3% of Facebook users are of ages 25-34 years old.

Advertisers on Facebook can run still image and video ads in various aspect ratios (1:1, 4:5, etc.), giving you more options to customize the look of your ad. Facebook also lets you run Messenger ads on Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp; a feature that TikTok doesn't currently have. Messenger ads can be used to directly target audiences who may be potential customers of your brand.

TikTok does not allow for static image ads; only ads with a 16:9 vertical ratio.

TikTok on the other hand has its branded hashtag challenge, which allows brands to engage with audiences via a sponsored hashtag challenge that encourages user-generated content.

Both Facebook and TikTok allow you to run lead generation campaigns that help you to reach specific audiences who may be interested in your products or services. Lead generation ads feature custom questionnaires that help your brand better understand your audience, who become leads, and can help you achieve your business goals.

Here’s an ad campaign we did here at Play Vertical for one of our clients on TikTok, Basmo (a reading app), that was targeted toward younger book lovers, and tier 1 countries.

Our recommendation and final words

Before you make the switch from one platform to another, make sure that the platform meets your brand’s needs. Are you targeting youth? What’s the purpose of the service you provide? What age range will make the most of your app? Can you use both platforms for your campaign?
